Chevre, this week’s parsha is תְּצַוֶּה (Titzaveh) and Parshat זכור (Zachor). Where last week we learned about the pieces of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), this week we learn about the clothing of the High Priest and the “normal” Priest, their inauguration and some of the sacrifices. We then go into the succession of the High Priest. This is an important topic in business operations. Who is on-call, who is backup, who gets an escalation, what happens in the CxO (CTO, CFO, CEO, etc) is incapacitated or dies? All these questions around what happens in “the real world” and life are important to have plans in place AND tested, so that there can be as graceful a transition as possible. That leads into Parshat Zachor where we remember what Amalek did to us. Amalek, you may remember, attacked the stragglers of Bnei Yisrael as they were going through the desert. And Amalek are the “bad guys” in the Purim story that we will read next week. In every generation there is a group that manifests the aspect of Amalek. The Maftir (final reading) for this week includes the phrase “wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heaven.” I argue that it should be possible to eventually turn an Amalek group into a non-Amalek group, like Israel making peace with Egypt. The difficult challenge to each generation is understanding how they must accomplish that for their time. Shabbat Shalom.
