Miketz - Chanukah - 2025

Chevre, this week’s parsha is Miketz (מקץ) and it’s Shabbat Chanukah AND it’s Rosh Chodesh Tevet. Our family usually goes Shabbat Chanukah to cousins that live on a Moshav outside of Teveria. Every year we talk about that IF Shabbat Chanukah is Rosh Chodesh then it’ll be the longest benching (Birkat Hamazon, not HaAmazon) possible. And this year we have it.

We remember that Yosef is in jail and the cup bearer and baker of Paro received their redemtion and punishment. https://x.com/Frumside/status/2001344943886078161 Now Paro has 2 dreams and the cup bearer remembers Yosef. Yosef says the dreams are essentially the same. There will be 7 years of plenty followed by 7 years of hardship and famine. And Yosef offers up a solution about saving the good years plenty to cover the hardship years.

This is good advice and something that folks in the tech world can learn from. Let’s take a startup, they may get huge amounts of funding to start and many of them will blow through that quickly. But with judicious usage of the funds, they can potentially stretch the same funds out longer.

In the cloud world, I have been focussing on cost optimization and getting the best “bang for your buck” and helping customers understand the economics of decisions they make while using the cloud.

At home, there are plenty of people on the Internet telling us we should be saving more. You never know when you’ll need a car repair or a house repair. And, unfortunately, there is always the potential of some kind of natural disaster.

So the lesson I take this week from the parsha is that, when possible, save for that rainy day and always be looking at what your spending to determine if there is a more economical way forward.

Shabbat Shalom, Chanukah Sameach and Chodesh Tov.
