Toldot - 2024

Chevre, this week’s parsha is Toldot (תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת). In this week’s parsha there is an episode where Yitchak’s team are in confrontation with the herdsman of Gerar. Yitchak’s team dig a well and the others take them over. This happens several times. Eventually, Yitchak gets to Rechovot and there they are able to maintain their well and to stay for a while.

I find this episode interesting, water was and is an important commodity, especially in the climate of Eretz Yisrael. As we see here, wars have been fought over water. I’m appreciative of the efforts of the current State of Israel that has desalinization plants to make water from sea water. This means we are less reliant on the flowing of water from rivers.

In terms of the cloud, we share resources amongst everyone in the AWS cloud. The AWS infrastructure team does their best so that it appears that resources are infinite and that we are the only ones in the cloud. But in reality, we share compute, networking, power and everything else that goes into a modern computing. The fact that the impact of “noisy neighbors” has been reduced so much is an amazing feat of engineering.

So on this extended Thanksgiving weekend (I’m in the US), I’m thankful for the amazing engineering that goes into the cloud and makes it feel like I’m the only one on my resources.

I’m in Kemp Mill, MD for Shabbat, so if you think you see me at KMS, it probably is me and please come over and say “hi”. Just remember that I don’t remember my own name until I see it written on my tallit bag, so I pre-emptively appologize for not remembering anyones name, including my own.

Shabbat Shalom and see you next week at re:Invent
