Chevre, this week’s parsha is Va’eira (וָאֵרָא). This week we have Moshe again trying to push back against HaShem, but eventually he comes around (Have Backbone, Disagree, and Commit). And we have the start of the plagues. I want to focus on the 2nd plague of the frogs. There is a famous children’s song about the frogs being everywhere (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrhhVSVYV5E). This reall reminds me of issues I’ve faced here and there with disks filliing up. I don’t think Pharoah could clear out the frogs with a script that rotates logs though. Maybe he needs to set a cloudwatch logs retention policy, but I don’t think that would have helped either. I heard a Dvar Torah recently that was saying this was the first plague that impacted Pharoah. The Nile turning to blood was less impactful on him personally. But frogs being all over the place really did impact him directly. I always imagine a picture from my son’s children’s parsha book with pictures of frogs in the food containers, in the cooking fire, literally everywhere. And that is often how I felt when I had systems that halted or crashed due to logs filling up disks. I think I got the better end of the deal, however, since I could still drink my coffee throughout the crisis. Shabbat Shalom and keep your logs rotating appropriately.
