Chevre, this week’s parsha is Pinchas (פנחס). And the Jewish world is now on the same page regarding parshiot. Pinchas, last week, took matters into his own hands and slayed a Jewish Prince and his Midianite lover in the Mishkan (they were having relations in the Mishkan). Pinchas, had not been made a Kohen yet. Only Aaron and his 4 sons were made Kohanim (Priests), but Pinchas was not. Pinchas was the grandson of Aaron (son of Elazar). And while Aaron’s sons and offspring would be Kohanim going forward, Pinchas was already alive and not annointed with the others and thus did not make the cut at that time.
Only when Pinchas showed bias for action did he receive the Kahuna (to be a Kohen). We talk about things being grandfathered. Situation existed before the rule changed and so the situation will be allowed to continue to exist. If anything changes then the rules may apply. For example, Lambda supports 123 version of ABC language. You can use and build that Lambda, but at some point, that version will no longer be supported or maintained. Your Lambda will continue to run, but you will lose the ability to change it. If you want to change it, you’ll need to upgrade to a supported version.
We have another census (it is The Book of Numbers), the explanation of the law of inheritance along with the daughters of Zelophahad (they had no brothers and wanted to inherit their father’s estate, which was granted). Yehoshua is made the successor of Moshe. And we then have the offerings for the holidays. This is the same section we read on each holiday and the Mussaf prayers are taken directly from this area of the Torah.
This week there are a lot of lists and details. I personally am a list maker, so this makes sense for me. ;-)
Shabbat Shalom.
