Nitzavim-Vayelech - 2020

Chevre, this week’s parsha is נִצָּבִים - וַיֵּלֶךְ (Nitzavim-Vayelech). There is a passage in this week’s parsha that really speaks to me. “For this commandment that I command you today - it is not hidden from you and it is not distant. It is not in heaven, for you to say, ‘Who can ascend to the heaven for us and take it for us, so that we can listen to it and perform it?’ Nor is it across the sea, for you to say, ‘Who can cross to the other side of the sea for us and take it for us, so that we can listen to it and perform it?’ Rather, the matter is very near to you - in your mouth and your heart - to perform it.” I have so many thoughts on this passage. First, “it’s not in heaven” (or in the clouds), but we see and I know, that much of the Divrei Torah that I listen to are stored in the cloud. I have Lambdas in Ohio that go out and download them for delivery to me automatically. Next, “they are not across the sea”, well, since we don’t have a region in Israel, everything is basically across 1 or multiple seas. The important thing here, is that the goodness and the holiness is inside each one of us. We have the ability to do the right thing. May we work toward bettering ourselves and each other as the High Holidays quickly approach. Shabbat Shalom.
