Chevre, this week’s parsha is רְאֵה (Re’eh). The parsha this week continues Moshe’s farewell speech. One section talks about private altars and how offerings will be brought to the place “the please G-d chooses to rest His Name”. We understand this to be Jerusalem. In the AWS world, we understand this to be “friends don’t let friends build data centers”. In another section, we learn not to copy the customs of the locals. When this comes to Avodah Zarah (idol worship), this is followed. However there are plenty of things that Jews do that were learned from other cultures. Whether it’s the stripes on the tallit (from Roman aristocratic togas) to the 5 day work week (in Israel, that’s Sun - Thur). While it’s possible to do things in the cloud similar to how they are done on-prem, it often removes the benefits (especially cost benefits) of moving to the cloud. And it’s nearly impossible to run serverless on-prem. One of the greatest sections of this week’s parsha is about being warmhearted and openhanded to your brethren. This comes in a section about loans, but I think about it as the Account Team is open to customers, to listen to their issues and what they are trying to accomplish and working with the customer to build efficiency and cost effective solutions. May we all happily participate in the final section of the parsha, the Aliyot LeRegel (Passover, Shavuot, Sukkot) speedily in our healthy days. Shabbat Shalom.
