Metzora - 2022

Chevre, this week’s parsha is מְצֹרָע (Metzora) and שבת הגדול (Shabbat HaGadol). This week we continue learning about Tzarat and we learn that it can “infect” clothing, objects and buildings. We learn there are purification processes for people and buildings. I think of Tzarat like tags applied to AWS resources. If we look for them, we can see them, but they don’t necessarily affect the functioning of the resource itself. If we (or the Cohen) do not look for them, then they have no impact. Without the Cohen/Priest declaring it Tzarat (inspecting the tags), then there is no spiritual impact. And then there is a process to cleanse in which the tag would be removed, again by the Cohen. So maybe this is more like a tag applied by security declaring this resource problematic and needing further investigation. When the resource has been dutifully handled, security inspects again and if everything is good, then the “offending” tag is removed. May we all be purified on this Shabbat HaGadol, the Shabbat before Pesach/Passover. More next week on the holiday. Shabbat Shalom.
