Chevre, this week’s parsha is וַיִּקְרָא (Vayikra). We start what the sages called the Book of Cohanim. There are a lot of rules about the operation of the Mishkan (Tabernacle). What strikes me this week that I think we may often gloss over is that the sacrifices are expensive. I know it’s ironic that we use the word sacrifice in our daily lives, but here we are talking about adding salt, a super expensive spice of the time, to all the meat. And we are talking about sacrificing large animals like bulls. Or even fine flower that is expensive and time consuming to produce. This morning I was adjusting the size of a personal EC2 instance and I was looking at the prices compare t3a.nano with t3a.micro and what this would do to my Savings Plan. And I was thinking about the costs involved to get the outcome I want. In my day job, I’m often talking to customers about their spend and thinking about ways for them to save. Here, in the parsha, when we are talking about connecting to The Holy One, Blessed be He, we spend more to connect with the almighty. We often think of the holidays and the costs of them. We have Passover coming and the cost of the Matza for the Seder (or Seders outside Israel) and having enough Matzah and other kosher foods for the week. Some folks go to destinations for Pesach. We often have out of town guests that come to visit. All of these are our modern sacrifices and ways that we connect with a higher power. As we have now entered the month of Nissan and start to prepare for Pesach. I bless you all, and please bless me back, for a connection to each other and one above. Shabbat Shalom.
