Chevra, tomorrow is יוֹם הַכִּפֻּרִּים. While it is the day our fates are sealed for the next year, it is generally a happy day (despite fasting) because it is the day that we believe that our sins have been forgiven. In any case, there is also a sense or urgency, especially during נעילה (Neila). This is a prayer that is only said once a year and it is about the closing the doors, the final sealing. In the Beit HaMikdash, Neila was “done” daily when the doors to the Beit HaMikdash was closed in the evening. In our days, we only say it on Yom Kippur - 2019. When I think of the closing of the doors, I think of the Nicanor gates. These were the gates or doors between the Ezrat Nashim (the outer courtyard) and the Ezrat Kohanim (the inner courtyard). These were the only gates made out of copper all the other gates were made of gold. These gates were made in Alexandria, Egypt and when on the boat to Eretz Yisrael, there was a storm. The sailors threw one of the doors over the side to make the boat lighter and when they went to throw the second one, Nicanor said “if you will throw this one too, throw me with it” and he clung to it. The storm subsided and when they got to Jaffa, he was very upset about the 2nd door. They saw, however, that the door was under the ship and had followed them all the way to Jaffa. Because of this miracle, they did not make these gates golden. (Yoma 38a). So I think of these gates when I am in Neila and thinking of the doors being closed.
