Chevre, this week’s parsha is תּוֹלְדֹת (Toldot). Nearly the entire parsha is comprised of the relationship between Esav and Yakov. Starting with them fighting in Rebecca’s womb, Esav coming home from the hunt and selling his birthright to Yakov and culminating with Yakov stealing Esav’s blessing and fleeing the country. When Rebecca sees that Yitchak is getting ready to bless Esav, she prepares Yakov to take his place. She makes the food for the meal and dresses Yakov in Esav’s clothing. So first, I think it’s important to stress communication between parents. This is a clear indication that Yitchak and Rebecca do not appear to communicate well. There is a suggestion that the blessing that Yakov steals was not actually the primary blessing, that Yitchak was reserving that for Yakov anyway. But Rebecca and Yakov scheme to steal the blessing and Yitchak says these are the hands of Esav, but the voice to Yakov. This reminds me of when you are in the AWS console looking for a resource and can’t find it. After using the console for more than a few weeks, one automatically learns to look at the region selector to make sure you’re in the right place. Yitchak’s eyes were dimn with age and so he couldn’t see the upper right corner in the browser. I personally use various browser extensions to color code or add flags so it’s more likely I’ll realize I’m looking at the wrong region. In any case, it’s worthwhile to be careful and not steal from your sibling which will force you to flee the country. Shabbat Shalom.
