Chevre, this Shabbat we take a break from reading the Parsha and we read about Sukkot. We also read Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) (we read a different Megilla for each of the 3 festival holidays, Pesach, Shavuot and Sukkot). What is interesting here is that Sukkot is Zman Simchateynu or our Joyous time and Kohelet seems the least joyous Megilla. It’s attributed to Shlomo HaMelech (King Solomon) and he uses the word Hevel consistently. While I always understood Hevel as “futile“, I recently read a drash that explained that we should look at Kohelet’s statements as an understanding that life is fleeting and only a short period of time. As I read through Kohelet this Shabbat, I’ll be reading with a new perspective because of this explanation and because I’m a different person this year than I was last year. I hope to continue to grow in both Torah learning and Cloud learning. If one wanted to compare Kohelet’s fleeting moment to something in the cloud, I would say it’s like a spot instance. Even if you intend to have that instance around for hours or days, it could be gone in an instant and you need to be ready to handle that. Shabbat Shalom and Modiim BeSimcha
