Chevre, this week’s parsha is Vayeshev (וַיֵּשֶׁב) and Chanukah (חנוכה). This parsha, at least the very beginning really speaks to me this week. I’ve returned from abroad and Yaakov has too. He’s now settled down and encounters domestic issues. His favorite son, Yoseph, has his dream and has his special coat. The point of the coat is that with long sleeves, he can’t work like normal. This is an indication that, unlike his brothers, he does not work in the field. I don’t usually wear a restrictive coat, but the field I work in is not the same as Yaakov’s sons either. My field is the outskirts of the cloud where the customers (what we used to call users) meet the cloud. After Yoseph is sold into slavery, he runs Potiphar’s household for a while, gets sent to prison for not being improper with Potiphar’s wife. And in prison, ends up running the prison. It seems to me, that Yoseph’s “long sleeves” and his dream (Think Big) are indications that he’s more management material. While Esav was more at home in the field and Yaakov was more at home in the yeshivah, Yoseph also seems more at home in a management role while his brothers are more apt in the field. With this insight, it makes sense why Yaakov may have favored Yoseph, they are more alike than the other brothers. I can imagine Yaakov teaching Yoseph the insights of how to use Lambda properly and when to use ECS with Fargate instead.
On this Shabbat Chanukah we commemerate another war against the Jewish People. We won that war and we will win this war as well. We are united like never before across the Nation of Israel. Shabbat Shalom, Chanukah Sameach, and we continue to pray for the success and safety of our valiant soldiers and the safe return of all our captured brethen.
